Former Lives Revisited

I am angry. Music critics everywhere are writing off Ben Gibbard's new solo album because it’s not sad enough. He obviously went through a very high profile divorce, so they expected him to put out a Hawthorne Heights album or something. Maybe he’s happy. Maybe he hated her and is really happy about the divorce. Maybe he’s a good songwriter with a supreme talent for storytelling, and he doesn't limit himself to writing about one thing. Maybe the sadness isn't in the lyrics but in the songs themselves.

Dear music critics: this album contains one of the saddest and greatest lines I have ever heard in a song.

“It’s been a basement of a year, and all I want’s for you to disappear.”

The first time I heard this song, it felt like a punch in the gut. It’s not often that I relate to something so strongly that it hits me like this line did. He takes a common, yet difficult to describe feeling and expresses it in a new and simple way. Anyway, music critics can suck it. This album is sad, and happy, and beautiful. His voice is as incredible as ever. Zach already reviewed the album, and I pretty much agree with whatever he said.

Song of the Day 11/1/12

So I want to contribute to this blog, but I'm not very good about talking or writing about music. I can tell you if I like something or not really. So I thought maybe now and then I'd just stop in and make a "song of the day" post where I just share a song that tickled my fancy on a particular day. Maybe every now and then I'll even post an "album of the day/week." Here goes...

Halloween is Grinch Night (An Autumn Playlist)

As a self-proclaimed Grinch of all holidays, it makes sense that I don't care for Halloween. Okay, I don't despise it or anything. I'm just not into fun-sized chocolate bars, pumpkin-carving, or dressing up. (A few New Year's Eves ago, I even went to bed at 10:00). I just don't like holidays.*

When I thought about making a Halloween playlist, the Grinch in me told me to think again. Without further ado, I present to you an Autumn-themed playlist, without any of the trappings of annoying greeting card holidays.

*On a side note, I hate Facebook statuses about early Christmas music, and I HATE seeing Christmas items in stores before Halloween.

Mr. Frosty Man

This video is for Mr. Frosty Man, one of the new songs on Sufjan Stevens upcoming Christmas album. I love it. It's bloody, gory, gross, crude, and everything that Christmas is all about. Enjoy.

Benjamin Gibbard- Former Lives (album review)

Former Lives is one of my favorite albums of the year (despite what all the reviews say). Ben (I guess it's Benjamin now) Gibbard takes a break from Death Cab to put out a solo album that (as he puts it) is more reminiscent of his record collection than his song writing with his band. Duncan, for example, sounds like a Harry Nilsson throw back. Broken In the Western Sky could have been written and sang by Glen Campbell.

I've listened to this so many times this week and can't find anything wrong with it. The song writing is great, the music is great, his voice is great, but every review I read consistently under rates the album. I guess there's something I'm not hearing when I listen to it.  I enjoy every song on the album. It's very diverse (there's a mariachi on Something's Rattling) and very much a solo album. Listen to it despite what Pitchfork says. I don't think you'll be disappointed, especially if you're a Ben Gibbard fan.
